How to solve

How to Solve Word Problems Step by Step

Word problems can feel tricky because the maths is hidden inside a story. A child may know addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, but still feel stuck when the question uses words. The best way to solve a word problem is to slow down and turn the story into a number sentence.

The 4-step method

1Read twice

First read to understand the story. Second read to find the numbers and the actual question.

2Find clue words

Words like total, altogether, left, each, share, fewer, and more usually point to the operation.

3Write the number sentence

Translate the story into addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division before calculating.

4Check the answer

Put the answer back into the story and ask: does this make sense?

Worked example

Mia has 4 bags. Each bag has 6 marbles. How many marbles does Mia have? The clue is "each", so use multiplication: 4 * 6 = 24. Mia has 24 marbles.

If the question said Mia gave away 5 marbles, then you would subtract after multiplying: 24 - 5 = 19.
