How to Solve Division Step by Step
Division means splitting into equal groups. Some questions ask "how many in each group?" and others ask "how many groups?" Both use division.
The division method
1Find the total
This is the number being split.
2Find the group clue
Look for words like each, share, groups, boxes, teams, or per.
3Use multiplication backwards
If 6 * 4 = 24, then 24 / 6 = 4.
4Handle leftovers
If items do not split evenly, the leftover is a remainder.
Example: 24 cookies shared by 6 kids means 24 / 6 = 4. Each kid gets 4 cookies.
What is a remainder?
If 25 cookies are shared by 6 kids, each kid gets 4 and 1 cookie is left over. So 25 / 6 = 4 remainder 1.
