How to Solve Percentages
Percent means "out of 100". When children remember that one idea, percentages become much easier.
Percentage steps
1Read as out of 100
25% means 25 out of 100.
2Use easy anchors
50% is half, 25% is a quarter, and 10% is one tenth.
3Find 10% first
To find 10%, divide by 10. Then build the percentage you need.
4Check the size
Percent answers should make sense: 75% is bigger than 50% but smaller than 100%.
Example: Find 20% of 60. First find 10% of 60, which is 6. Double it: 20% is 12.
Percent, fraction, decimal
50% = 50/100 = 1/2 = 0.5. Seeing the same value in different forms helps children connect topics.
