How to solve

How to Solve Fractions Without Panic

Fractions are numbers that show parts of a whole. The top number is the numerator. The bottom number is the denominator. Most fraction mistakes happen when children forget that the denominator tells the size of the pieces.

The fraction method

1Name the parts

In 3/4, the 3 counts the pieces and the 4 tells how many equal pieces make one whole.

2Match denominators

To add or subtract fractions, the pieces must be the same size.

3Work with numerators

When denominators match, add or subtract the top numbers only.

4Simplify

If both numbers can be divided by the same number, reduce the fraction.

Example: 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4. The denominator stays 4 because the pieces are quarters.

How to add fractions with different denominators

For 1/2 + 1/4, change 1/2 into 2/4. Now the denominators match: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
