How to Solve Area and Perimeter Problems
Area and perimeter are easy to mix up. Perimeter means the distance around the outside. Area means the space inside the shape.
Remember the difference
1Perimeter goes around
Add all side lengths to find the outside distance.
2Area covers inside
Count square units or multiply length by width for rectangles.
3Use units
Perimeter uses units. Area uses square units.
4Draw it
A quick sketch helps children see whether to add or multiply.
Example: A rectangle is 8 cm long and 3 cm wide. Perimeter = 8 + 3 + 8 + 3 = 22 cm. Area = 8 * 3 = 24 square cm.
Common mistake
If the question asks for fencing, border, or distance around, use perimeter. If it asks for carpet, paint, or space covered, use area.
