How to Solve Algebra Equations for Beginners
An equation is like a balanced scale. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other side. The goal is to get the unknown number, often x, by itself.
The balance method
1Find x
Look for the unknown number in the equation.
2Undo addition or subtraction
Use the opposite operation to move numbers away from x.
3Undo multiplication or division
If x is multiplied, divide. If x is divided, multiply.
4Check
Put your answer back into the original equation.
Example: x + 5 = 12. Subtract 5 from both sides: x = 7. Check: 7 + 5 = 12.
Harder example
2x + 3 = 11. Subtract 3 from both sides: 2x = 8. Divide both sides by 2: x = 4. Check: 2 * 4 + 3 = 11.
